"LARGE SCALE SYNTHESIS OF CARBON NANOTUBES AND THEIR COMPOSITE MATERIALS"

  • Research Training Network funded through the Fifth Framework Improving Human Potential Programme
  • Contract number HPRN-CT-2000-00037

1 - OBJECTIVES

  • Optimization of the synthesis conditions for large scale synthesis of multiwall and single wall carbon nanotubes.
  • Control of the diameters (inner and outer) and length of the carbon nanotubes.
  • Purification of the carbon nanotubes at a large scale.
  • Preparation of composite materials for industrial applications.
  • Multidisciplinary characterization of the as-made and purified samples, as well as the composite materials.

2 - RESULTS

  • Production of multiwall (MWNTs) and single wall (SWNTs) carbon nanotubes by the following methods: catalytic (CCVD), triphasic plasma, electric arc discharge and CW-CO2 laser.
  • Purification of carbon nanotubes by oxidation, by acidic dissolution and by selective sedimentation using polymers.
  • Synthesis of composite materials such as: polyaniline/MWNTs, PmPV/MWNTs and PVA/MWNTs.
  • Characterisation of the nanotubes and composite materials by TEM, PIXE, PIGE, ICPS, XPS, NMR, Raman, TG, adsorption ... by the different partners.
